The IAS Exam is held every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to select officers for the Indian Administrative Service. The exam is a three-stage process consisting of a Preliminary Examination (objective type papers), a Main Examination (written papers) and an Interview.

The Preliminary Examination is held in May/June every year and consists of two objective type papers on General Studies. Candidates who qualify in this examination are eligible to appear for the Main Examination which is held in October/November every year. The written examination consists of nine papers, two each on English, Hindi and one each on General Studies, Essay, Optional Subject Paper 1 and 2. Candidates who qualify in this examination are then called for an Interview which is conducted by a Board of UPSC Members.

The final selection is made on the basis of marks obtained in the Main Examination and Interview taken together.
